Its interesting seeing all of the They-Are-Billions-like games now coming out (Conan: Unconquered, Age of Darkness, Diplomacy is not an Option, also kind of Mindustry and Riftbreaker). They feel like a riff on tower defense games but also owe a fair bit of DNA to Stronghold.
Hm. I recall generally that once your outer perimeter was breached, things tended to get hopeless fast as infected buildings generated new enemies. That generally forced me to rely on a rigid perimeter. I might have 'crumple' walls designed to lengthen the time enemies were...

...trapped in the killzone of my units and towers, but that was about it. I might keep old defensive lines as last resorts, but there was never a situation where my main battle position was well to the rear of my outer perimeter.

Huh, this is very near to the opposite of how I'd play. Generally I was expanding with militarized expansions, with a core of units doing the bulk of the damage and retreating as positions were overrun. It wasn't a big deal to lose a strictly military perimeter
