Its interesting seeing all of the They-Are-Billions-like games now coming out (Conan: Unconquered, Age of Darkness, Diplomacy is not an Option, also kind of Mindustry and Riftbreaker). They feel like a riff on tower defense games but also owe a fair bit of DNA to Stronghold.

yes do it. I've been using your blog as a reference for my tabletop RPG's and this would be immensely useful (I would also settle for a reading list on the subject)

I think that for tower defense games, defense in depth won’t make sense because losing a “ring” costs you something, but the attack costs your enemy nothing.
-
That doesn't necessarily apply when you have a diverse selection of enemies with different correct counters (or who may be worn down by long-cooldown tower abilities). Kingdom Rush has actually been getting more defense-in-depth friendly over time, so that's one exception.

@Roelkonijn dig as many ditches as possible :) -
Absolutely. If you aren't sure you have dug enough ditches, it is because you haven't dug enough ditches. If you ARE sure you have dug enough ditches, it's because you're wrong.

Please do! I'd love to see an analysis on castles and forts in movies and pop culture. Which castles are poorly designed and which are just unrealistic?

And maybe a list of games that did it well? D-in-D in old stronghold was why i was playing them. Would love to find a new goto. I think the fundamental problem of game design for D-in-D are unsolvable though
-
1. The space it takes means a massive unbalance between them and the production side. So you need to massively reduce it but... people like it. 2. D-in-D makes it hard to read how well you are doing currently. Feedback on what you built is hard. you will only know at the end
