I sometimes wonder what kind of impact it would have on American politics if high-visibility euergitism was still something we expected and our elite performed - instead of nothing, political activism or (low visibility) 'effective altruism.'

Doesn't it seem like there's more of a loss in the visibility of the giving than the actual amounts, though? Bezos is probably the worst example, but Zuckerberg pledged to give 99%, etc etc. Is that right, and if so is that what the meritocracy explanation predicts?

It seems more like the giving has become less about buying public image. Or more cynically, still about buying public image, but buying image among a different set of people.

Twitter's probably not the place to tease this out, but this does make me wonder about the causes of the rise of Meritocracy as an ideology. Was it the unavoidable result of industrialization? The child of civil service reform? I want to read up on this history.
