University donations are donations from the elite to itself. Visibility is low - regular people do not interact with universities. Only about a third of Americans have a college degree.
If your definition of "elite" includes both "a third of the population" and "people who can donate tens of millions of dollars to a single project," I think it is not a good word. But I am just a businessman and an Amerikaja says we have not even had our First Sophistic yet.
Seconded. There are pretty prominent examples of "donations" that are just conspicuous consumption for other elites to see (any niche-yet-well-funded art ever), but uni buildings are just shows of largesse. Also, oc less Americans go to uni 1/2
