I sometimes wonder what kind of impact it would have on American politics if high-visibility euergitism was still something we expected and our elite performed - instead of nothing, political activism or (low visibility) 'effective altruism.'

Why do you think this kind of practice ceased? An effect of the post-War expansion of the public welfare state? Something else?

Frankly? The Meritocracy. The belief today by much of the elite (a group, to be clear, that I probably ought to include myself in, what with my degrees) that their success is entirely earned rather than but-for-the-grace-of-God reduces the emotional demand for noblesse oblige.

He was the ur-example I thought of when Dr. Devereaux mentioned it being done in the American past. Possibly because I live in Pennsylvania, but yes, Carnegie put his name on goddamn everything.

I love the concept of reputational capital but the historical problem with this sort of largesse is of course letting the donor choose their donations and use them as a bully pulpit. There may be no better current example than academia. But it's a general concept worth pursuing.

Yeah, my spouse used to work in facilities for an ivy league university, and it was a constant issue that they couldn't build new wings fast enough to keep up with the donor cash, while sanitation, HVAC, and electrical systems were languishing.
