It has a lot of relevant thematic elements: an army out of its depth in an unfamiliar land, lack of mission clarity/unity of purpose, heroics spent in a vain rearguard action in the service of an already lost cause, the complexities of political conflict over religious divides.

And of course a conflict where - as the poem tells it (not as the actual campaign went) initial dramatic success falls apart due to a lack of cultural understanding and political will. Honestly, I think it fits pretty well. AOI
