And of course a conflict where - as the poem tells it (not as the actual campaign went) initial dramatic success falls apart due to a lack of cultural understanding and political will. Honestly, I think it fits pretty well. AOI

Maybe not from Song, but Charlemagne: two knights from opposite sides meet, realise they have the same coat of arms, figure out both are descendents of same Trojan Hero and resolve to not fight.

I don't know the medieval reference, but surely this is in turn an allusion to Diomedes and Glaucus who upon realizing their grandparents (Bellerophon and Oeneus) were guest-friends, resolve not to fight and instead trade armor.
