If this is relevant at all, it's only relevant to the jobs issue and not to quality of life, but is phds teaching high school students part of a (good) solution in any potential future?
Some PhDs do this but it often takes a fair bit of adjustment. Many school systems want education degrees rather than subject matter degrees (e.g. a double major history/education instead of an advanced degree in history).
I have a tremendous amount of respect for primary and secondary school teachers but I'd also say that's not really the job a PhD historian has trained for. Overlapping but not identical skill and knowledge sets.
