I make 58k as an associate professor, which is why I teach overloads every semester and a summer class and grade AP exams and do some public writing. So yes, 400k seems pretty damn rich.

I think people don't realize how low academic compensation frequently is. It'll be close, but I think I'll make more money this year being a public intellectual than teaching, though my teaching load isn't as heavy since I'm adjuncting at R1s.
The thing is, on the one hand, I make anywhere from a third to a quarter of what the TT/tenured in my department make w/ the same teaching load, AND YET my department's per-course pay for adjuncts is way higher than the average.
