I make 58k as an associate professor, which is why I teach overloads every semester and a summer class and grade AP exams and do some public writing. So yes, 400k seems pretty damn rich.

The thing is, on the one hand, I make anywhere from a third to a quarter of what the TT/tenured in my department make w/ the same teaching load, AND YET my department's per-course pay for adjuncts is way higher than the average.

I’ve talked to an Associate Prof of History at Columbia who seemed to be struggling with the cost of living there (it sounded like he was just going to have to move out to the suburbs). Non ladder faculty are obviously in a whole other level of economic pain in a place like NYC.
