One thing I realize I entirely forgot to talk about with this past week's blog post, which was also about the grad student experience, was also application fees, which work the same way to keep out talented future scholars from non-elite backgrounds.
...I am apparently just blissfully missing out on most of this discourse, but absolutely the low stipends are underappreciated as a major barrier keeping out students from non-elite backgrounds (or just crippling them financially afterwards).

Honestly, given the state of the academic job market, "this is only for rich kids who can afford to spend decades unemployed" seems like the status quo. It isn't a *good* status quo, but...
