But the tension is real! and it comes out clearly when thinking about training local forces. If you want to radically remake a society (say alter its civil & military institutions & rewrite its gender norms), you are going to have to do some imperialist, even colonial things.

And all too often, as w/ the original Know Nothings, such oversimplification is an attempt to disguise that the real moral principle is, "I don't care who suffers, so long as we're not involved & I don't have to hear about it." Intellectual horse-blinders masquerading as wisdom.

I actually strongly would prefer to live in 1960s Kabul than Kabul under the Taliban. Theocracies suck more than almost any other form of government. You're creating a straw women, maybe because you believe that the US is always trying to do the right thing. I don't know.

Forget '60s Kabul. You made a very explicit moral and human-outcomes comparison between the Kabul government of 2002-2021 and the Taliban. Taking issue with that is not a straw woman argument, it's just an argument.https://mobile.twitter.com/OreInNicaragua/status/1444757447034429450 …

The really annoying problem about the US is that most US citizens image that our invasions or interventions of other people's countries help. Since WW II, Panama is a maybe. Iraq I stayed on mission.
