And so advanced Humanities studies becomes another perk of the rich and something that discriminates between classes. 
This reads like something out of Dickens. The deeper I go, the more I feel that anyone who puts themselves through this parasitic misery machine willingly is not in their right mind.
I'm sort of... glad (?) that I got my mental breakdown right at the start of that path and didn't end up with a mix of the Stockholm syndrome and the sunken cost fallacy that would make me inflict this torture upon myself year after year after year.

Well said. Whenever someone asks me this, I always ask them if they are ok with a different end point: gov't work, PME, other teaching destinations, consulting, museums, etc. I tell them that with a book and 3 peer reviewed articles I'm still from from a shoe-in for a TT job.
You should probably make it clear you are talking about US grad school from the POV of an American national (though a lot of this seems likely to be true across other countries).
