British people tell me ‘dynasty’ is pronounced with a short i in the first syllable (obviously because of the y, hence gym) and then turn around and spell tire as the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre.

I’m reading Ed Watts’ new book and the lengths he’ll go to avoid using that word. “Constantinopolitan Romans” doesn’t roll of the tongue so well I’m afraid.

I have to admit, if I was doing the post-470 ERE, I think my instinct is to call them 'the Romaioi' with just a clarifying note somewhere at the beginning. But that's not an ideal solution either!
