Why spend 5-7 years living within shouting range of the poverty line in high cost towns delaying major life milestones while working 80 hour weeks under conditions that induce anxiety/depression at 6 times the rate of the general population to train for a job that doesn't exist?
At least flagellants got to go to heaven, in theory. Even in a fully funded program, you are basically doing the same thing to yourself, all for the privilege of going on the academic job market.
