"Believed in the republic" seems like a rather strange description of a man who, with the support of (other) monarchists, overthrew the Republic and literally reinstated the Spanish Monarchy (1947)? He didn't let there be a King, but that just means he de facto made himself King.

I think a better choice might be someone like Fujimori or, in order to match the sheer brutality, Pinochet. A parallel imo worth making is De Gaulle, but he was a lot less murderous. The civilian-military distinction does a lot of work in preventing clean comparisons, I think.
