So actually teaching a History of Rome course rather than a bigger ancient world survey means writing an entire lecture on Sulla and the events of 88-78. Which I did. Eash. And now I am going to go pet cats and eat ice cream.

It's odd because I knew all of this, but going over it again and writing it out was an oddly sharp experience. Plutarch's description of Sulla in the Temple of Bellona just...eash. Eash. What a monster.

How much of Plutarch's description do historians think is accurate here? He's writing about 150 years later.

One assumes that Plutarch is embroidering and embellishing, but it is clear that Sulla had lots of people killed and my understanding is that there is evidence (including in other sources like Strabo) that Sulla's wrath against the Samnites, for instance, was quite real.
