Surprised, but quite happy by how high the Bread-and-Farming series is, as well as Sparta, both of which are very nearly pure history with very little pop-culture. Though I think probably Siege of Gondor + Helm's Deep together is, in my view, the best thing on the blog.
I have a real soft-spot for the essays on Cicero, Dhuoda, Thucydides, Bertran de Born and Antarah Ibn Shaddad (the 'Trip Through' text-analysis posts) but they are a lot less popular. I'm still quite proud of them though.

I am personally a big fan of how the “fuck Sparta” thread has been woven throughout the Devereaux Cinematic Universe.
Honestly, I much prefer the pure history without pop culture, especially since I have almost no familiarity with the pop culture you talk about. But I may not actually qualify as a "public."

The true master piece of the blog is the Victoria post about waging the Great War. It is an incredibly deep economic theory article disguised as a video game review.
The entire Victoria series was particularly good at that, IMO. (not necessarily always economic theory, but on its topics) It also sold me on Victoria in a way that the EU4 series, for example, did not quite as much sell me on EU4. (or at least got me to "watch for Victoria 3".)
I agree with your assessment of the LOTR series - I've read them at least twice 
They both helped me understand the books better and gave me a completely new perspective on how mil hist actually works. Chapeau!
