So where did the trenches *come from*. Never been able to work this out. How were they dug in the first place? Seems like it involves a lot of men stood around in the open with spades in range of the enemies...everything
You start by digging foxholes, something infantry in this and later periods will begin doing if left stationary for any length of time. Those foxholes rapidly evolve into more complex networks (but the foxhole means you're doing the rest of the digging from cover).
