I think almost every humanities discipline has this problem
I find that people like historiography just fine, though it tends to do best when framed in terms of "how do we know (or not know!) what we know" rather than in terms of "here's a story of angry old guys you've never heard of arguing with each other."

Like, ethics, sociology, psych -- so many intro courses in these fields are structured as "here's some old guys arguing with each other" and it's a huge turn-off to students as well as a disservice to the discipline

I can say that my AP high school kids found a lesson on the historiography of Reconstruction and its connections to US politics/race relations interesting.

It's a case where the history of the history is an unusually important part OF the history.

As someone who's worked at a musuem and in public school I genuinely think we should actually focus far more on historiography. It's a more desperately needed understanding for critical analysis then knowing the minutiae of individual historical events.

Classicists and French Revolution historians debating each other indirectly or quite purposefully makes for minor amusement.

I think how-someone-know-something is always fine to people. But when some group try to claim authority to an answer (not without good reason), that's when people try to revolt. In this case the authority is those "angry old guys".
