After getting far too many papers turned in with pages loose, I have a policy that all papers must be stapled (with a *very* minor deduction). I also accept paper-clips, which I steal before stapling the paper myself. I recommend this policy; I never run out of paper clips.
To be clear, I announce this policy the week before papers are due (including the part where I will steal paper clips and replace them with staples) being sure to note that our library has a stapler freely available to all by the circulation desk.
The bit about paper clips is that I find that paper clips tend to come off in a pile of papers jostled around in my bag for any length of time. Thus I replace with staples and take the paper clips as tribute.
Are you sure that’s wise? Shouldn’t you announce a policy as the papers are being handed in, in the interests of teaching your students that the rules are changeable and capricious, and there is no way for them to win? Seems like a better preparation for their future.
