To be clear, I announce this policy the week before papers are due (including the part where I will steal paper clips and replace them with staples) being sure to note that our library has a stapler freely available to all by the circulation desk.

The bit about paper clips is that I find that paper clips tend to come off in a pile of papers jostled around in my bag for any length of time. Thus I replace with staples and take the paper clips as tribute.

I switched to only accepting electronic versions of papers (must be a pdf for normal classes), and I’ve never been happier. Alas, no free paperclips.
-
I vastly prefer marking a physical paper with my old-fashioned red pen, so I've stuck to physical papers for in-person classes.

I thought you taught mostly graduate courses. Have they still not gotten it by that point?
-
Ha, I wish. Still in adjunct-land and generally adjuncts don't get to teach the grad students. Alas.

Had a high school theology teacher who did this and took 1 point off for each spelling error. I freakin proofread those papers.
-
My spelling is atrocious so I try to avoid using my lithobolos when in my glass house.

something I didn't realize when I started in museums was for any document you want to keep long term plastic paper clips are preferable to stapled documents - in our digitization projects we request vendors remove staples! Obviously student papers its whatever of course
