So I see the realism argument for 'Taiwan won't ever fight' but I don't think it holds. History has its share of republics choosing to go down fighting in essentially unwinnable wars 'for the cause' and the faint hope that a distant supporter will one day redeem their freedom.

Yes, but in older times. Since the 1960's the power of the state over its population has cratered, even in authoritarian nations. Republics have fought outmatched wars in modern times when the conditions make them believe they are engaging in limited conflicts.

Georgia, for example, only fought because they believed it was a limited war which could be a fait accompli. If the Russians rolled armored divisions towards Kiev the Ukranians would have made a deal fast. They fought in the Donbass because they knew Russia was restraining.
