Heavy artillery is the biggest factor, especially from 1914-1916. The French generals in their communications are constantly hitting on the theme about fighting uphill against a torrent of heavy shells. It also gave the Germans a major advantage in their local operations.

The Germans are on the offensive in several locations in 1915: there's a nasty grinding battle in the Argonne, a major offensive around Ypres (where poison gas is first deployed), and ejecting the French from their foothold on the Chemin des Dames.
