Also, I'd tend to think sources from our period would be relatively abundant, short of a global catastrophe on the scale of asteroid impact or nuclear war. I tend to think a lot of the declinism is premature.
I suppose if I had to pin us to a time period, I'd probably lean towards the high Roman empire, with centuries (or at least decades) of relative prosperity and general peace combined with increasing unsolved problems, social ossification and a persistent cold-war standoff.
