It's easy to say "we should just give them all of the weapons" but weapon systems have to be maintained, they need trained crews etc. So all represent continuing costs even if they were initially 'free.' They all detract from what Taiwan needs to focus on: deterring the PRC.

I'd be cautious there. "Our economies are so interconnected we could never go to war" is an argument with a long record of failure. The list of countries that eventually decided national prestige or honor was more important than their economies is long.
Yeah we *just* saw in Afghanistan how effective it is when you give an underequipped army hard to maintain/field combat vehicles, and I'd like to think we can at least learn a little bit from our mistakes.
The Afghans craved Taliban rule. Even if we thought they shouldn't. The Taiwanese definitely don't crave a CCP takeover - the island's elite will end up in shallow pits and everyone knows this.
