Oh, and while I'm here: stick to standard documents. Obviously we all tailor our materials, but tacking on lots of additional asks for first-round research/teaching/diversity statements that force the applicant to rewrite one from scratch is 
someone i knew joked "you could just whittle down the applicant pool by adding a "stick your hand in a box of spiders for five minutes" section" a professor thought about it for a second and said, "no, that's a bad idea" "everyone will just stick their hand in the box"
"we'll just have made even more work for ourselves"

I spent about nine months job hunting in a totally different field (healthcare IT), and so many places had the same vibe. I once spent half a day applying for a position, got a form letter rejection, and decided never to apply there again.
Seems pretty sensible but apparently not so much.
Statement on statements? That's a joke right?
More than this and the job ad is more about the employer than the prospective employee. Which is, in many ways the point: the onerous application requirements simply camouflage the reality of a broken job market. 1/
If a selection committee has a hard time selecting one applicant out of seventy-five, more documents are not going to help in any realistic fashion. 2/
Yeah, I had to produce entirely too much shit for jobs I didn't get this year. (Luckily I eventually landed on one -- thank God for late-notice resignations!)
