Some interesting archery demonstrates from Tod's Workshop (https://youtu.be/Avz1O27Dz50 ). I don't know what the draw weight on these bows are, but I'm struck towards the end that at anything but close range, it seems like you'd absolutely have time to raise a shield in response...
...I wonder if that explains the lack of evidence for lots of coordinated volley fire. There's no advantage to it for bows because you aren't managing reload times, and it might actually be harder to defend against a continuous hail rather than big vollies.
In a battle, arrows are most effective when they cause an opponent to do something dumb. At Dorylaeum, Crusaders stayed put under fire, while a volley at Agincourt caused an ill-advised French charge (when the French were blocking the road, and English had to go through them!)
It's definitely different in a siege which could be more attritional, but the morale impact of volley fire vs. continuous fire is important when morale is just as important as attrition
