"Classics should also be the study of Persians, Carthaginians, Egyptians, Celts, Germans, Jews..." How much does Classics as it currently exists include this? I'm concerned this is a defense of something other than Classics as it currently stands.
My standard ancient world survey, which in many universities would be seen as part of the Classics curriculum, covers Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Near East, Greece and Rome (and with the latter, Carthage and Gaul).
Just curious on this topic, how much do you cover Persia and pre-Achemanid Mesopotamia?
The course is split into three equal-sized units: one covering Egypt and the Near East to c. 500 BC, one covering Greece, Macedon and the Hellenistic world to c. 280 BC, and then one following Rome to the fall of the empire in the west.
