I am really struck by how much there is a popular misconception that what historians do is read textbooks *really hard* and memorize them rather than, you know, engage with primary source evidence for periods in the past and try to figure out what happened and why.
I honestly have run into *academics* from other fields who trot out, "Oh, I could never be a historian, I can't remember names and dates well." Neither can I! Fortunately, that's not my job and instead why we have reference texts!

But it is really a bit pathetic when you run into the conspiracy theorist who launches into 'but how do you know?' argument expecting that the knowledge in question is 'turtles all the way down' and... It isn't. There's a foundation to it, and that's where historians work.
