Yeah, no, I get that. I just also think that - like a lot of fantasy tropes - LotR is actually more complex and serious than the imitators it spawned, which often have this 'lost golden age' without LotR's sense that it is lost for a reason and making way for something else.
Esp. if one includes the events of the Silmarillion and you realize that both the elves and numenor, at the great height of their power, used that power mostly to do quite bad things. Gondolin was snazzy, sure, but like - the sons of Feanor sucked pretty bad.

Part of the genius of the Lord of the Rings is that you don't have too, really. It fills in the origins of some of the songs and a lot of why the elves seem so weary of it all. But it's the best kind of long detailed worldbuilding backstory: the optional kind.
