Dark Souls is an interesting kind of example too. The problem there is the 'First Sin' - the decision by one of the gods to try to stop the natural cycle while the gods were on top and the humans on the bottom.
Creating this sort of downward spiral of mini-ages-of-fire, each one built on the ruins of the last, each one a bit less bright than the last, because the world cannot actually rejuvenate itself.
