Dark Souls is an interesting kind of example too. The problem there is the 'First Sin' - the decision by one of the gods to try to stop the natural cycle while the gods were on top and the humans on the bottom.

I want to be clear I was not being sarcastic at all, fantasy amidst the ruins is tremendously evocative and I consider this one of LotR's outstanding features

Yeah, no, I get that. I just also think that - like a lot of fantasy tropes - LotR is actually more complex and serious than the imitators it spawned, which often have this 'lost golden age' without LotR's sense that it is lost for a reason and making way for something else.
