Which leads to 5) be born in a wealthy family which can both support you through years of being underpaid in graduate school and which will provide you a cushy landing when all of your efforts are repaid with only debt and shattered dreams.
I realize those last two things are nothing anyone wants to hear but that doesn't make them untrue.
If you're wealthy enough just found a university and keep the pyramid scheme rolling!
I have once - only ever once - saw someone who was the 'X Distinguished Chair of Y' where *they* were X and I couldn't help but think, "My lord, they actually did it and endowed their own chair." It was not a historian, to be clear.
