Honestly, when I looked at this, it sure seemed to me like we had more evidence (though some of it very late) for the Spartans each having individualized shields than we did for a uniform lambda.
I always find it really striking how much of the modern 'badass' portrayal of the Spartans consists of changing out large parts of our actual evidence for Sparta with pop-culture tropes about modern elite soldiers.

It was a point I think I remember you making really well in one of your other r/askhistorian responses where you noted how Pressfield had basically converted the agoge into a boot camp, complete with yelling drill instructors, quite apart from our actual evidence.

Yep! I like to describe Pressfield's novel as USMC fanfiction with spears. The ancient context is just fancy dress to him; the Marine is the archetypal soldier and therefore all soldiers are, by nature, like Marines.
