The real problem is that the average American watching news for the last ::checks notes:: two decades knows little more about Afghanistan now than they knew in 2001. The important function of building a base of public knowledge for this moment (and many others) was never done.
Expecting “normal” Americans to know much about AFG isn’t practical IMO. This is the job of the bureaucracies; it’s part of our public trust. And we got 20 years and billions and blood to pay. And as a whole, we failed. That includes me—I was part of the COIN world in my own way.
You're probably right. I was in college in the Spring of 2006 and the history department offered a course specifically on 'Afghanistan and Central Asia.' Seemed relevant, so I took it; it was 5 guys in ROTC, one of their friends and me. 35 seat class, 7 actual students.
