Exactly. Just because the terrain and the tenacity of the defenders made it harder for him than conquering some other places doesn't = failure.

I think the entire 'graveyard of empires' bit also crucially distracts from the truth about Afghanistan. It isn't some uniquely unconquerable place. It's just that since the overland silk road became less important, Afghanistan is some of the least valuable real estate on earth.
