"Graveyard of Empires" is of course, partly cope. "We failed, but so did Alexander the Great, Britain, and the USSR." Identity crisis averted! American exceptionalism maintained!

I remain really confused by the inclusion of Alexander on this list. The kingdom of Bactria lasted until around 100 BCE. That's a pretty decent run. Fair sight better than ours.

Exactly. Just because the terrain and the tenacity of the defenders made it harder for him than conquering some other places doesn't = failure.

I think the entire 'graveyard of empires' bit also crucially distracts from the truth about Afghanistan. It isn't some uniquely unconquerable place. It's just that since the overland silk road became less important, Afghanistan is some of the least valuable real estate on earth.
