A Republican started the war, with broad, bipartisan support (pols & public). A very popular democratic president then continued the war and signed off on the strategy. Then a republican president decided to pull out, and a democratic president decided to carry through.

I agree w/ Tom Nichols (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/08/afghanistan-your-fault/619769/ …) on this: we did this. The American people did this. Sure, leaders of this or that sort failed along the way, but in the end, this is our fault. Own it, do what you can, promise to do better next time. There will be a next time.

Did anyone expect it to end differently? Did no one read history? You know, recent history like the Soviet one. Follow the trail of tears from invading Afghanistan by Great Powers.
