Frontline Taliban units are letting the Americans do their thing at the airport. But I’m not sure it’s believable they’ll restrain themselves until the end of the month. Or that their commanders will accept a two week long evacuation of many of their erstwhile opponents.

I'm not very confident one way or another, but I suspect they'll leave the airport alone for as long as there are US personnel there. The last thing, I'd think, that they'd want is to do some sufficiently provocative to trigger American re-intervention.

They’re certainly doing that now. But half a month is a different matter. But getting people out takes time.

Agreed, that's why my lack of confidence. Overall I'd guess it will come down to a discipline question - can the leadership keep their guys from doing something foolish but emotionally satisfying and for how long. Not forever, I think.

At the very least, the Biden administration seems to be gambling that the Taliban couldn't possibly muster a force capable of actually *taking* the airport from the troops we have there. I have a lot of faith in our troops but that is a big gamble. Things go wrong in war.
