We're going to have to, I think, discuss this on the blog at greater length soon but this is by and large my view. I love doing history, I'm proud of my degree, I got it in an excellent program full of great mentors... ...and I don't feel I can really recommend it to anyone.https://twitter.com/AsheeshKSi/status/1425976802833469444 …
So, here's my honest question - what do you want to do with that degree? Where are you hoping it will take you and what are the steps on that road?

By the by, the warning about stipends is not just about living - programs that don't pay for you don't care about you. You won't get the professor-time and resources to thrive. And the degree from an unfunded program won't carry the clout you need.
-
There are rare exceptions - the most notable one in history being post-bacc programs in languages in departments that lack full graduate problems; those can be worthwhile - but 9 times out of 10, unfunded programs are worse than useless.

I've been asking myself that question throughout the entire BA. And honestly? I don't have a clear answer. I just like to learn something I'm passionate about, with the guidance of those who are already 'experts' in it.
