'Oh, but Bret, you're doing OK' - I mean, sure. I am actually doing OK. But 'go viral on the internet so you can supplement adjuncting to survive' is not a career plan, it's dumb luck. Should you spend ten years praying for dumb luck at the end of them? No.
Well, your internet work is a really valuable outreach effort. Think of yourself as a modern-day Erasmus: writing in all directions, and, in the end, making a real difference.

I absolutely loved studying archeology, to the point where I worked my butt off for years to be able to be allowed into a university in the first place! I still had to quit because of all the ableism in academia.
