'Oh, but Bret, you're doing OK' - I mean, sure. I am actually doing OK. But 'go viral on the internet so you can supplement adjuncting to survive' is not a career plan, it's dumb luck. Should you spend ten years praying for dumb luck at the end of them? No.

I had a great mentor in undergrad who taught me many excellent things, and to this day, I am still most grateful for the spiel he would give at the end of each quarter about what our employment prospects really were and how much grad school could cost.

The time-scale is off for self-interest. Someone going to grad school this year is going to hit the job market in 5-8 years. The people waving the warning flag now aren't going to be competing with them.

Do tutition fees affect your answer? Like, if the potential student were going to study in a country with low or no tuition fees for university, would you instead encourage them to study whatever they want?

If you don't also get a stipend and tuition covered don't bother. Even with a stipend, really think about whether you're going to be more than just a teaching assistant for the school, and how desperate is the university for cheap TAs.
