that’s a whole lot of underdotting
Yup. Underdots indicate a letter that is unclear or uncertain (whereas the brackets indicate letters wholly missing but supplied by the papyrologist or epigrapher). Periods in place of letters indicate a known number of missing characters.

I took an epigraphy course and a paleography course in grad school and both made me glad that I am not an epigrapher, paleographer or papyrologist.

yeah, I did a transcription project in a grad seminar – EpiDoc XML markup & XSL transformation to HTML – which was kinda fun, but that was relatively neat high medieval gothic, not like Coptic papyri
