When I wrote part IV of 'The Queen's Latin' I was disappointed that time and scope constraints kept my look at the Voshart Roman emperor portraits brief.
Fortunately, @SpenceMcDaniel has done a a much more thorough look at them! https://talesoftimesforgotten.com/2021/08/07/how-accurate-are-photorealistic-portraits-of-roman-emperors/ …

I think
@SpenceMcDaniel here has managed to get at what I was trying to say, but frankly much better and more clearly - both problems with the portraits, but also with how people tend to think about and use them.1 vastaus 0 uudelleentwiittausta 16 tykkäystäNäytä tämä ketju -
The one thing I suppose I might add is that I think the tendency of regular folks to see those portraits and assume that everything about them is photorealistic and true has a lot to do with how credulous outlets online reported on them.

Thank you so much for the share and the praise! Unfortunately, I haven't made it to Part IV of "The Queen's Latin" yet, so I didn't know you mentioned the Voshart portraits. Otherwise I would have linked your article somewhere.

No worries! You cover it better than I did, and with more nuance. I'm just glad there's a careful treatment like this out there I can have in my back pocket when those portraits show up to say 'yeah, these are neat, but caveat lector...'
