I hate writing abstracts if they have a low word limit. Like, I had to write a 300-word abstract for a conference. It was accepted, but they gave me all these comments worrying that my argument seemed to lack nuance. HOW CAN I HAVE NUANCE IN 300 WORDS
On the flipside, I recall a conference abstract request at 1,000 words. At that point, haven't I pretty much just written the paper?

In my opinion, 500 words is the correct abstract length for ye-standard-15-20minute conference paper.

500-800 is my preferred range. I don't mind long abstracts because it helps me sell the thing better and forces me to think more about the eventual composition of the paper/presentation ahead of time.
