Bret: do we know this from THE surviving letter?
The funny thing is, there's so much surviving papyri that the main bottleneck is getting it all published, which is why someone like Dirk Obbink could steal important as-yet-unpublished papyri from major collections and resell them.
I’m pretty sure I have never said “neat!” on encountering this kind of thing in the archives.
“OMG are you *#&@#$^ serious?!” is my more usual response
Well, see, the nice thing about being an ancient historian is that when our subjects do this on papyrus, we have other specialists (hurray for papyrologists) who read and transcribe it.
One of the things I LOVED about working with the @RichardsCenter during the summer was digital transcription of handwritten letters and paleography for cross-written ones. It is laborious but such a great skill to have!
Maybe @rachelshelden and @PSUHistory will bring it back!
