I think @SpenceMcDaniel here has managed to get at what I was trying to say, but frankly much better and more clearly - both problems with the portraits, but also with how people tend to think about and use them.

The one thing I suppose I might add is that I think the tendency of regular folks to see those portraits and assume that everything about them is photorealistic and true has a lot to do with how credulous outlets online reported on them.

Surprised to note that Severina is listed as "probably the only cis female Roman emperor..." The inclusion of "cis" in there tells me someone's been doing their niche reading, and I am very happy.

I've actually written about the question of whether Elagabalus was a trans woman or merely a feminine man whom transphobic ancient writers portrayed as a trans woman for defamation purposes several times on my blog. That's why I specify "cis-female." 1/
