Anyway, so Caesar butchers people who weren't even enemies of Rome for political gain for 10 years until 49, when his command is set to be up. Since that would make him liable for prosecution for all of the crimes he did, he decides to overthrow the republic instead. 16/xx

Not sure if you're into the modding scene for HOI but that's a thing in the kaiserreich mod and it is explicitly fascist with the entire structure crumbling into civil war when the Caeser dies

I mean I hate to take the side of these people but what they probably mean by "American Ceasar" the program they are thinking about probably resembles an "American Octavian".
-
which is to say its probably more relevant to talk about why that's a bad idea also.

This seems like a fairly negative interpretation on Caesar's actions, and more positive of those he opposed. Obviously there's the corruption and brutal war, but these all seem fairly standard for late-republic politicians. (1/_)

I've only read Goldsworthys Caesar book, but he seemed more neutral to mildly positive leaning, though I read it a few years ago Anyways you're the historian, so I'll respect your take [2/2]

Wow. What an informative and attention grabbing thread. I wonder how historians will write about some of our leaders 2000 years from now.

"What American needs is-" *checks notes* "-a military leader to violently overthrow the legally elected government, leading to the permanent collapse of democracy in favor of a brutal empire."

Yeah might be game over if that happens with our current problems. I totally think it's worth writing up. Also may be worth mentioning the economic inequality in Rome at the time and how he used the populist goal of land reforms. We need a Cato (that believes in land reforms).
