Kind of funny to watch an affectively polite center-right figure wring his hands about the realization that being on the right means, as it has always meant, that you actively favor things like brutal imperialismhttps://twitter.com/davidfrum/status/1422573314934022147 …
Again, I'll stipulate to a lot of colonial apologia on the right (and that's bad). But that doesn't seem unique - the Progressives could be pretty pro-imperial (e.g. Teddy Roosevelt) and hard-leftist regimes are often pretty OK with imperial adventures.

I think you could make an argument that the innate traditionalism of the right leads them to defend the status quo which in turn leads them to defend existing traditional imperial structures, but that seems like a much weaker form of the argument here.

I don't think it's that much weaker, I think it's something like the essence of the matter. Colonial hierarchies are among the regimes of property whose defense is a defining feature of right-wing politics.

If you're expecting that I'll stipulate to Teddy Roosevelt being a leftist, I certainly will not!

Er - government regulation, national parks, anti-trust action, pro-labor laws as part of the Square Deal, government food inspection and (for the time) pro-union policies? A definition of the left which doesn't include that is narrow indeed, I'd think?
