Certainly, some on the right are imperialists. Some on the left are too - the term 'tankie' originated with hard-left support of what can only be fairly described as Soviet imperialism in Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
So while there is absolutely an imperialist right - and it is very much rearing its ugly face right now - I am not sure it is fair to say that being of the right definitionally means that someone supports imperialism, past or present.
Say better then that the right is the natural home of colonial defense and apologia and right-wingers who do not favor those things have no grounds for being surprised by that.
Again, I'll stipulate to a lot of colonial apologia on the right (and that's bad). But that doesn't seem unique - the Progressives could be pretty pro-imperial (e.g. Teddy Roosevelt) and hard-leftist regimes are often pretty OK with imperial adventures.
